We were told that the Lord Buddha is a human being. And yet he can do a lot more than an ordinary man on the street. He is an unique person. He has extraordinarily physical and mental capabilities.

Here are the 10 extra mental power that he has.

1. Thanathana kosila nana:
Knowledge of what is right cause or not (reasonable or unreasonable)

2. Vipaka nana :
Knowledge of resultant effects or consequences

3. Sabbatthagamini patipada nana :
Knowledge of destinies of living being

4. Anekadhatu nanadhatu nana :
Knowledge of various wishes and desires of living in different types.

5. Nanadhimuttika nana :
Knowledge of various wishes and desires of living beings

6. Indriyaparopariyatta nana :
Knowledge of how low-or-high grade faculties of human being

7. Jhanavimokkhasamadhi sampatti nana :
Knowledge of Jhana, liberation, concentration, and absorption and their defilements that cause impurities

8. Pubbenivasanussati nana :
Knowledge of remembering past birth / existences of living beings

9. Cutupapata of Dibbacakkhu nana :
Knowledge of deaths and rebirths of living beings, or Divine Eye Attainment

10. Asavakkhaya nana :
Knowledge of elimination of kelisa and eradication knowledge of taints and passions.

It is not my purpose to imply that we should try to emulate the Buddha and acquire these 10 extraordinary qualities. But, to know what the Buddha could do with these unique mental power is beneficial. It gives us comfort, faith and strength to know that we are learning knowledge and skills from a teacher who has extraordinary power, beyond the capability of a normal human being.

Please let me know if you think other wise. We can have a cordial discussion.

We are approaching the end of the year now and may I take this opportunity to wish you Happy New Year. May 2011 be a good and healthy year for you.
